RETROSPECTIVE ROOM. (S1) [Information Paintings] 9 paintings, 2015-6. Acrylic, ink on canvas, 28” x 24” each. One painting on wall.
The Information Paintings are made in series. Each series starts with an intentional selection of a set of museum wall label photos from the archive. A selection may be all the labels from a room of a retrospective (Series I & II) or pertain to works from the same artist (Series III) among other possible criteria.
Following the label selection, a list of technical strictures is drawn up for how the paintings can be created. The strictures include specific painting materials, techniques, and equipment, as well as painting size, specific paints and colors. The strictures then become the creative parameters to work within - and against - and force a certain exploration of an area of the pictorial language of painting. These strictures change each series.
